Frequently Asked Questions
Senior & Veteran Discount FAQ
Straight answers about Veteran discounts, Senior discounts, eligibility, verification, local participation and how Senior Vet Discounts works.
The Most Important Thing to Know
Veteran and Senior discounts are not standardized.
Every company can set its own percentage, age requirement, military eligibility, identification requirement, exclusions and participating locations.
That is why Senior Vet Discounts uses one rule again and again:
About Senior Vet Discounts

Senior Vet Discounts is an independent informational website and developing app designed to help Veterans and Seniors discover potential savings before they pay.
Is Senior Vet Discounts a government program?
No. Senior Vet Discounts is an independent project and is not a government agency.
Does Senior Vet Discounts provide the discount?
No. The business or organization provides the discount. Senior Vet Discounts helps users discover potential savings and understand how to check eligibility.
Does Senior Vet Discounts guarantee that a merchant will give me a discount?
No. Businesses control their own policies. A discount can change, be discontinued, have exclusions or vary by individual location.
Who created Senior Vet Discounts?
Senior Vet Discounts was created by Vietnam Veteran, author and entrepreneur Bruce Goldwell.
Veteran & Military Discount Questions
Do Veterans receive discounts?
Many businesses offer Military or Veteran discounts, but there is no universal Veteran discount.
Each company determines its own eligibility, percentage, verification requirements and exclusions.
Do all Veterans qualify for every Military discount?
No. Eligibility differs by program.
A business may include Veterans, active-duty service members, National Guard, Reservists, retirees, spouses or other military groups.
Always check the merchant's current eligibility rules.
What proof may be required for a Veteran discount?
Requirements depend on the merchant. Businesses may require accepted military identification, Veteran identification, online verification, enrollment in a rewards account or another form of qualifying proof.
Will Senior Vet Discounts verify Veteran status?
The planned app may allow Veterans to verify status through an approved third-party verification provider.
A verified status in Senior Vet Discounts would not replace whatever identification or enrollment a particular merchant requires.
Are Veteran discounts available every day?
Some are. Others are offered only during special promotions or specific events such as Veterans Day.
Senior Vet Discounts distinguishes ongoing discounts from temporary promotions whenever possible.
Senior Discount Questions
What age qualifies for a Senior discount?
There is no universal Senior discount age.
Some offers begin at 50 or 55. Others begin at 60, 62 or 65.
The business determines the qualifying age.
Does being 55 automatically qualify someone for Senior discounts?
No. Some businesses begin eligibility at 55, but others require a different age.
Do I need to prove my age?
A business may request identification showing your age. Other programs may verify eligibility through an online account or membership program.
Are Senior and AARP discounts the same thing?
No.
A Senior discount is generally based on age.
An AARP discount is normally a membership benefit available to eligible AARP members.
A business may offer a Senior discount, an AARP discount, both or neither.
Why don't employees automatically give me the Senior discount?
Employees may not know whether you meet the business's age requirement, and many employees understandably avoid assuming a customer's age.
The easiest solution is simply to ask.
Restaurant Discount Questions
Why do restaurant discounts vary so much?
Many restaurant chains include independently operated franchise locations.
Individual franchisees or locations may participate differently in discount programs.
If one location gives me a discount, will every location do the same?
Not necessarily.
A discount received at one location should not automatically be treated as proof that every location follows the same policy.
When should I ask a restaurant about a discount?
Ask before the server or cashier completes the transaction.
That gives the restaurant the best opportunity to apply an eligible discount.
What if a restaurant employee says there is no discount?
Respect the location's current policy. You can optionally report the result through the planned Senior Vet Discounts community reporting system.
Store & Retail Discount Questions
Do retail discounts apply to everything in the store?
Not always.
Retail programs frequently exclude certain brands, products, services, gift cards, promotional pricing or other categories.
Do I need to register before using a store discount?
Sometimes.
Certain retail programs require online registration, age verification, military verification, a rewards account or a registered phone number before checkout.
Why should I check before making a large purchase?
Even a modest percentage discount can become meaningful on a large purchase.
Checking eligibility, exclusions and enrollment requirements before buying can prevent missed savings.
Senior Vet Discounts App Questions
What will the Senior Vet Discounts app do?
The app is being designed to help users find nearby businesses, check potential Veteran or Senior discount information, get directions, show a reminder before paying, report the result and track savings.
Will the app show only businesses with discounts?
No.
Local search is intended to show nearby businesses whether or not Senior Vet Discounts has discount information about them.
If discount information is available, the business can receive a Potential Discount indicator.
Will Senior Vet Discounts maintain every store location in America?
That is not the intended design.
Local search can identify nearby businesses. The Senior Vet Discounts database can then match the business name to known discount information.
Can I change my location while traveling?
Yes.
The planned app will allow users to keep a home ZIP code while entering a temporary shopping ZIP wherever they are traveling.
Will the app provide directions?
The planned system will allow users to select a business and open their phone's navigation service for directions.
What is the Show feature?
The planned Show feature provides an easy-to-read reminder screen users can display before paying.
It does not guarantee a discount. The business still determines eligibility and may require additional identification.
Community Reporting Questions
Why allow users to report discounts?
Some discount policies vary by location and can change.
Community reporting can provide additional real-world information about what users are experiencing at individual locations.
What can a user report?
The planned app will allow three simple primary reports:
- I received a discount.
- No discount was available.
- The discount or policy was different.
Does a community report prove a discount is available?
No.
Community reports describe user experiences. They should be treated as helpful information, not as a merchant guarantee.
Savings Tracker Questions
Will the app track how much I save?
That is part of the planned app.
After receiving a discount, users can optionally record the amount saved.
What totals could the app show?
The planned tracker can show:
- Savings this month
- Savings this year
- Lifetime savings
- Number of discounts used
Why track small discounts?
A $2 or $5 savings may seem small by itself, but restaurant, retail, travel and service discounts can add up over months and years.
Before You Pay
When is the best time to ask about a discount?
Before payment is completed.
What should I ask?
Keep it simple:
What if I forget until after paying?
You can ask the business, but some merchants may not be able or willing to modify a completed transaction.
That is exactly why Senior Vet Discounts emphasizes checking before payment.
