How Do You Verify That You Are a Veteran?

Veteran verification depends on the business or program offering the discount.

Some businesses simply ask to see acceptable identification at checkout.

Others require you to enroll online and verify your Military status before the discount can be applied.

Some companies use independent verification services such as ID.me to confirm eligibility.

VERIFICATION DOES NOT CREATE THE DISCOUNT.

It helps prove that you meet the merchant's eligibility requirements.

Why Is Verification Needed?

Businesses offering Military and Veteran discounts need a reasonable way to determine who qualifies.

Verification helps businesses protect the programs from misuse while making it possible for eligible Veterans and Military families to receive the benefits intended for them.

Common Ways Veteran Status Is Verified

Instead of every company creating its own verification system, participating organizations can use ID.me to help establish eligibility.

How ID.me Military Verification Works

Sign into an existing ID.me account or create one.

Select the Military community and status that applies to you.

Enter requested service and identity information.

Verify

ID.me attempts to confirm your Military status.

Additional Proof

If needed, you may be asked for an acceptable Military document or other verification method.

After successful verification, you authorize ID.me to share the required information with the participating organization.

What Documents Might Be Used to Verify Veteran Status?

If automatic verification is not possible, a verification provider may ask for acceptable proof.

ID.me currently lists several documents that may be accepted for U.S. Veteran verification.

Examples Include

  • Driver's license or state ID with Veteran endorsement
  • Honorable Discharge Certificate
  • NGB Form 22
  • Reserve Separation Orders
  • State or county Veteran ID

Important: This does not mean every merchant accepts every item on this list at checkout. These are examples of documents ID.me currently identifies for its own Veteran verification process.

You Shouldn't Have to Carry Your DD214 Around to Get a Discount

A discharge document contains information that should be handled carefully.

The better approach is generally to use an approved verification process or an acceptable Veteran credential rather than carrying sensitive Military records from business to business.

VERIFY ONCE WHEN POSSIBLE.

Then use the merchant's approved account or verification process.

Privacy Matters

Veteran verification can involve sensitive information.

Senior Vet Discounts does not need to become a warehouse for Military service documents.

The planned approach is to rely on an established verification provider rather than asking Veterans to upload their DD214 or other service records directly to Senior Vet Discounts.

Data-Minimization Goal

After an approved third-party verification is successfully completed, the app should need only limited status information, such as:

  • Veteran verified: Yes
  • Verification provider
  • Verification date

Not copies of your Military service documents.

The account could then display Veteran verification status.

One Very Important Distinction

Verified by Senior Vet Discounts

Would mean that the app received confirmation through its approved verification process that the user's Veteran status was verified.

Eligible for a Merchant Discount

Is still determined by the merchant.

Each company decides which Military groups qualify, what identification is required and whether its own enrollment process must be completed.

Verified Veteran status does not guarantee a discount. The merchant always controls its own discount program.

What About the “Show” Feature?

Senior Vet Discounts is built around the idea:

Find. Show. Save.

A future app screen may make it easy to show that the user's Veteran profile has been verified through the app's approved verification process.

But that screen would not replace official identification required by a merchant.

The Screen Could Say

VETERAN VERIFIED

Veteran status verified through approved third-party verification.

Merchant eligibility and identification requirements still apply.

Senior Vet Discounts Is Not a Military ID

This distinction is important.

A Senior Vet Discounts screen would not be a Department of Defense ID, VA identification card or government credential.

It should never be represented as one.

THE MERCHANT MAKES THE FINAL DECISION.

Always be prepared to follow the business's own verification rules.

What If a Veteran Does Not Verify?

Verification should not prevent someone from learning about potential discounts.

The planned app can still allow an unverified user to search nearby businesses, view discount information and learn about available programs.

The Difference

An unverified user may select:

“Veteran”

as part of the user's profile.

But the app should not display:

“Verified Veteran”

until verification has actually been completed successfully.

Some of the most valuable recurring or retail Military discounts require advance verification.

If you wait until you are standing at the register, you may discover that enrollment should have been completed beforehand.

Can I use the app without being verified?

The planned app is intended to allow users to search and view general discount information without Veteran verification. However, an account should not be labeled “Verified Veteran” until verification has actually been completed.
